All of my ambitions were sort of universe-specific.

And this place doesn't lend itself particularly to ambition at any rate. But if you have no ambitions to chase, what exactly do you intend to do with yourself?

Well, sure, but we still need to get through "technically nothing you did in your own world mattered either, nothing you or I or anyone has ever done has mattered because nothing matters" in order to get to my actual point. Does it bother you?

I know it didn't have any greater meaning, but I knew what I had to get up and do every morning, at least. It was... satisfying.

...it wasn't boring. I got to learn things only a handful of people in the world knew. Figuring out the answers to things you couldn't look up in a book. I was good at it.

That's the sort of thing you enjoy, and you decided to work in a coffee shop?

It's not like I can't quit whenever I want. I just haven't found anything here particularly worth doing, at least not anything that takes up that much time.

This really is a boring little town. If you want something stimulating, you'll have to make your own excitement, I'm afraid.

No. I didn't create the system, I just work well inside of it.

But it's not here. I wouldn't recreate it if I could, and I can't.

I'm not suggesting trying to recreate your exact position, here. There are plenty of options open to you. Theft, fraud, destruction of property, recreational serial murder, that sort of thing.

How is any of that more interesting than any other stupid way of wasting time? I didn't like my job because I liked being a "bad person". [AIR QUOTES]

You liked your job because it wasn't boring and because it created a bunch of unique problems that needed to be solved in practical application. Being a "bad person" puts you in opposition to other people, which means it provides you with a steady source of ever-evolving problems with high stakes. Thus, fun.
