[The sun doesn't so much as rise as flick on with the sudden, glaring brightness of noon. Whatever time keeping device you have on you says its about 8:14am when this happens.

The power's back, but the time on your timekeeping device never really make sense with the position of the sun as it moves across the sky.]

[ takes it, and does so-- very slowly, paying closer attention to the notes ]

[ it takes a long while, just repeating, back and forth but mostly slow, before he looks up again, a bit embarrassed. ]

... I-- think it's okay? Er, rather. I think I get it. Maybe.

[ he looks a bit lost for a moment, but tries it... or, what he assumes medren means anyway. ]

Yes, just like that. Do it again and listen closely.

[ oh, i did it '^' following his instruction, just staring down at the strings as he touches them. ]

Ah...

It's different, right...?

[ looking back up at him ]

[personal profile] mindinthegittern 2017-09-25 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. There's a bigger gap between those notes than between the notes of a scale. Can you hear it...? Try playing the scale again, then the open strings, and listen for the difference.

[ nods, and gradually does so, listening closely ]

... I can hear it.

[personal profile] mindinthegittern 2017-09-25 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Great! Okay, why don't we put the instrument aside for a minute and I'll show you the visual notation of what you just heard?

[ oh no. looks a little fretful, but gently sets the gitten on the couch and shifts closer to medren ]

[ flusters uncomfortably ]

-- I can read.

[personal profile] mindinthegittern 2017-09-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that should make it pretty easy, since music notes are named after the first bunch of letters of the alphabet.

[personal profile] hailstormed 2017-09-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, are they...

[ do we have a paper, im gonna look at it ]

[personal profile] mindinthegittern 2017-09-27 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
[no, he's pulling a notebook and a pen over and drawing... mmm, let's start with a tablature since it's easier to relate back to the instrument]

So, this is one way to do it... this way shows the fingering that you use on the instrument.
